I think my computer is infected! What do I do?

Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly. Okay, if you suspect your computer might be infected you can do a scan with your computer’s built-in security. (On Microsoft Windows, this is called Windows Security or Windows Defender) After the scan, you can also do one with a third party tool like Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, or Bitdefender. Kaspersky has a handy portable tool for example. MacOS users are advised to remove suspicious apps via the App Store, then do a scan with one of the above antivirus recommendations. Phones/tablets do not need antivirus software, instead uninstall any suspicious apps and restart the phone. (power off, then back on) We can also help run special scans on your phone if you suspect you have been targeted with malware. For any of your devices, if your situation is more complicated or dire with concerns, I recommend changing your wifi password to disconnect your infected device from the rest of your home network until you can resolve the issue unless you really need internet on that device.
